Fire Safe Community Benefits for You and Your Community

Benefits and Requirements Explained...

Our Fire Safe Community is being led by Shelly Black, who is utilizing her experience of 20+ years of Volunteer Fire Fighting, 10 years MAU Mounted (all-terrain) Search and Rescue, plus her 30+ years of experience working within the insurance industry, with her own insurance billing business.

Seeing the absolute loss and devastation that happened from ALL the fires in California in 2024-January 2025, Shelly realized that too many people are simply unprepared for disaster situations such as wildfires. Not only are individual residents not adequately prepared – overall communities are not properly prepared, either.

There are *Safer from Wildfires fire mitigation plans, administered by CalFire that are in place in California that were designed to assist residents in learning and implementing better Wildfire Mitigation practices.

These programs also provide an opportunity for residents to save money on your insurance policies, as well as, positioning you to be in a National Data Base that insurance companies are required to utilize to identify property’s that are proactively working to prevent financial loss from wildfires.

As of 10/1/24 the State of California has Mandated that homeowners receive insurance discounts when they meet the mitigation guidelines for Home Hardening Levels 1, 2 + 3 with the largest discounts seen for Level 3 achievements.  Additionally, there are further discounts available for residents who have joined together to create and be qualified as Safer from Wildfire Communities.  *See below for more details about what is needed to create a Safer from Wildfires Community…

For those who want to create a Safer from Wildfires Neighborhood themselves (without the help of our Fire Safe Community Membership), here are some of the steps you will need to take...

*The Safer from Wildfire Communities are volunteer programs that anyone can choose to create and/or participate in. To create your own Community requires you finding 7 (or more) local neighbors to join your Neighborhood/Community. Once you have enough neighbors (minimum 8 homes) to be considered a Neighborhood, the Leader then will need to educate these neighbors on all the information that the Safer from Wildfire programs recommend for Wildfire Mitigation Actions, as well as create the needed guidelines for the action plans specific to that Neighborhood.

Community meetings will need to be held where the Leader provides each of the Neighbors with their necessary plans of action for their individual Wildfire Mitigations. The neighbors will need to take action to complete such mitigation efforts (to the best of their ability, within their individual property’s needs) and then report those efforts back to the Leader.

Once all the Neighbors have completed their Recommended Mitigation Actions, the leader will combine the detailed information from all the properties into a Neighborhood Community Assessment Plan. This Plan will need to document all the neighborhood actions taken for the first year, as well as, create a detailed one-year plan of action outlining the community’s recommended ongoing Mitigation Efforts. This collaborative data will then be combined to represent the overall Community Mitigation efforts and future action plans. The leader then submits their Neighborhood Application to the Safer from Wildfires online portal in hopes of qualifying to be Recognized and/or Certified, (whichever is provided within the Safer from Wildfires Program).

Once this data is correlated together the Leader will then need to formulate a Community Mitigation Action plan for the next 3 years. The first year addresses the 5 feet of clearance around the home, the second year will be addressing 5-30 from the home and the 3rd year will be addressing the 30-100 feet around the home.

Members of our Fire Safe Community will benefit from Shelly walking them through ALL of these processes… PLUS assisting you on your mandated insurance discounts and Community Evacuation Plans…
